Located in Peckham, Ansdell is an extension of victorian architecture typical of its vernacular.
Sometimes there is a clear concept from the outset of a project, in the case of Ansdell our journey with the client was one of working jointly client to develop a brief as we went.
The approach was all about creating moments of reflection throughout the house. Providing quiet spaces that open themselves up to moments of beauty from the outside world. By creating a monastic procession throughout the house one is able to themselves in a contemplative space.
The renovation provides a second-floor make-over, loft extension, and ground-floor rear extension situating the dining area as the central focus of the house.
The sky has the ability to inspire us. It's just a matter of the architecture considering and framing these moments in a mindful and gentle way. The house is lit by apertures that accentuate these rituals of daily life.
Leading up to the loft, a large roof light covers the length of the stairwell, providing an awe-inspiring view of the sky as one ascends.
In the ground floor extension, herringbone floor tiling in the dining area carries onto the outside, maintaining a connection between the indoors and outdoors.
Communal seating also straddles internal and external spaces creating dining areas on either side, creating the feeling of a frictionless relationship between the two. Through this project, we were keen to reaffirm the idea the garden can be used in the same way you would use any other room.
Generous slimline sliding doors make what is a modest space feel as spacious as possible framing the dining area as the primary communal space around which family life revolves.
